Welcome to the 43rd season of the St Albans Chamber Choir
The highlight of the season will be Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610
presented in their full form in the glorious setting of St Albans Abbey and for
which the Choir will be accompanied by notable soloists and instrumentalists
from the early music movement. The March concert features another Vespers, a
recently researched sequence by Monteverdi's predecessor, Victoria, performed
in the appropriate and beautiful Chapel at All Saints Pastoral Centre.
In December there is an opportunity to hear music from the Choir's new
recording 'Christmas across the Centuries', a sequence of contrasting Medieval
and modern settings of Christmas texts. In January the Choir and The Zemel
Choir give the London premiere of their jointly commissioned work The Mask of
Esther, in a repeat of the performance given in the Abbey the previous May, the
venue this time being the splendid West London Synagogue (near to Marble Arch).
The season opens and closes with concerts of English lyrical music,
celebrating the centenary of the birth of Gerald Finzi, a composer noted for
his response to words, resulting in "music that seems to be inevitably and
effortlessly at one with the poet's thoughts" (Andrew Burn).
